AJE 2016 Gold Medal Research Competition
ELIGIBILITY
To participate in the AJE 2016 Gold Medal Research Competition (the “Competition”), you and your nominee must be at least 18 years old as of the date of entry. Because of restrictions imposed by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), citizens and/or residents of Cuba, Iran, Northa Korea, Sudan, and Syria are not eligible to compete or be nominated. Void where prohibited by law. Employees of Research Square, LLC ("Sponsor") and their immediate family (spouse, mother, father, sister, brother, daughter, or son, regardless of where they live) or members of their same households (whether related or not) of such employees are eligible to participate but may not win any prize. By entering, you agree to these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor, which are final and binding in all respects. While anyone can enter, the First Place, Second Place, and Third Place prizes will only be awarded to a nominee with a research, academic, or related profession, for whom the Sponsor judges that the prizes would be applicable. Consolations Prizes (three total) will be awarded to each participant who enters a winning nomination.
ENTRY
All entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31, 2016 (“Deadline”). No purchase necessary to enter or win. A purchase will not improve your chances of winning. You have three methods of entering:
To enter on-line, fill out the online Gold Medal Research nomination form on Sponsor's website at http://goldmedal.aje.com (“Competition Site”). You will be asked to provide a full name, e-mail address, institution, and country for yourself and your nominee. Nicknames or aliases may cause your entry to be rejected. All entries must be completed in English.
Entry also permitted by mail or fax. To enter by mail or fax, type complete answers (in English) to the questions found on the online form on the Competition Site. Include your full name, complete return address, including zip code, telephone number (including area code), institution, country, and e-mail address. Fax to Research Square, LLC at (919) 287-2949 by the deadline indicated above. By mail, express, or UPS, send to AJE/Research Square, LLC, 601 West Main Street, Suite 102, Durham, NC 27701. All mail-in entries must be received by end of business (5:00 pm Eastern Time) on August 31, 2016.
LIMIT THREE ENTRIES PER PERSON. Any entries beyond the third will be disqualified. Please use the same name and email address for each of the three eligible entries. Please note that any individual nominee and/or participant may only win ONE prize.
No responsibility is assumed by Sponsor for any human, computer, online, or technical malfunctions that may occur.
RULES
Scoring: Winning nominees will be selected on the basis of the strength of the entry by a panel of three judges who are not employed by the Sponsor. Judges' names will be posted on the Competition Site. Specifically, nominations will be judged on the following:
Demonstration of the nominee's contributions to his or her research field
Demonstration of the nominee's contributions to society at large
Clear indication of the noimnee's involvmenet in the international research community
The winners of the competition will be notified by e-mail within approximately fourteen [14] days of the Deadline. If the win is not confirmed by the participant within thirty [30] days, the prize is forfeited and will not be awarded.
PRIZES & ODDS OF WINNING
Prizes are as indicated on the Competition Site (http://goldmedal.aje.com). First Prize is a $1,500 travel grant toward costs related to traveling or presenting at a scholarly conference in 2016 or 2017. Second Prize is one free poster design/layout from AJE (see https://www.aje.com/us/services/posters/ for more information). Third Prize is one free graphical abstract or animated figure from AJE (see https://www.aje.com/us/services/figures/ for more information). Nominator Prizes will be $100 Amazon gift cards for each participant who enters a winning nomination (three total). Prizes are subject to change at Sponsor’s sole discretion. Odds of winning are directly related to the number of entries and the participant's rationale for his or her nomination. Although each individual participant can submit three nominations, each nominee can only win ONE prize. If a participant receives first, second, or third place prize, he or she is not eligible to receive a Nominator Prize.
GENERAL CONDITIONS
The Competition is governed by, and these rules will be construed and interpreted pursuant to, the laws of North Carolina. A determined winner may be disqualified and, in such case, an alternate winner may or may not be selected from among the remaining eligible entries if a selected winner (i) cannot be reached because the prize notification or prize is returned as non-deliverable or unclaimed after 30 days, or (ii) is found to not have complied with the Official Rules. All unclaimed prizes will not be awarded. By accepting the prize, where permitted by law, each winner agrees to grant to Sponsor and its licensees, affiliates, and assigns the right to print, publish, broadcast, and use--worldwide in any media now known or hereafter developed, including but not limited to the World Wide Web--at any time or times, the winner's name, portrait, picture, voice, likeness, and biographical information as news or information and for advertising and promotional purposes without additional consideration. Further, by accepting the prize, each winner agrees, and by entering this Competition, participants agree, to release and hold harmless Sponsor, its licensees, and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, directors, officers, employees, representatives, and agents from any and all liability for any injuries, loss, or damage of any kind to person, including death, and property, arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from acceptance, possession, use, or misuse of a prize, participation in any competition-related activity, or participation in this Competition. Void where prohibited.
Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds, in its sole discretion, to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Competition or Website; to be in violation of the Terms of Usage of the Website; to be acting in violation of the Official Rules; or to be acting in a non-sportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any other person. Any use of robotic, automatic, programmed, or like entry methods will void all such entries by such methods.
Any attempt by a participant or any other individual to damage deliberately any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of the Competition is a violation of criminal and civil laws and, should such an attempt be made, Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such participant to the fullest extent permitted by law. In the event of a dispute as to entries submitted by multiple users having the same e-mail account, the authorized subscriber of the e-mail account used to enter the Competition at the actual time of entry will be deemed to be the participant and must comply with these rules. Authorized account subscriber is deemed to be the natural person who is assigned an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses or domain names associated with the submitted e-mail address. Sponsor may prosecute any fraudulent activities to the full extent of the law.
LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY
Sponsor is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by Website users or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Competition or by any technical or human error that may occur in the processing of submissions in the Competition. Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft, or destruction or unauthorized access to the Website. Sponsor is not responsible for injury or damage to the participant’s or to any other person's computer related to or resulting from participating in this Competition or downloading materials from or use of the Website. If, for any reason, the Competition is not capable of running as planned by reason of infection by computer virus, worms, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor that, in the sole opinion of Sponsor, could corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Competition, Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Internet portion of this Competition for any entries and select the winner from regular mail-in entries and Internet entries received for that drawing prior to the action taken. IN NO EVENT WILL SPONSOR, ITS LICENSEES, AND/OR THEIR PARENTS, AFFILIATES, SUBSIDIARIES, AND RELATED COMPANIES, THEIR ADVERTISING OR PROMOTION AGENCIES OR THEIR RESPECTIVE OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, REPRESENTATIVES, AND AGENTS, BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES OR LOSSES OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF YOUR ACCESS TO AND USE OF THE INTERNET SITE OR THE DOWNLOADING FROM AND/OR PRINTING MATERIAL DOWNLOADED FROM THAT SITE. WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, EVERYTHING ON SUCH SITE OR ANY PRIZE WON IS PROVIDED "AS IS," WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. Some jurisdictions may not allow the limitations or exclusion of liability for incidental or consequential damages or exclusion of implied warranties, so some of the above limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. PRIVACY
By entering the Competition, participants agree to Sponsor's use of participant's personal information as follows: to post results on the web site, for publicity for future contests, and/or to send you information about Sponsor’s products. Nominees will only be contacted if they are selected as finalists or are selected to win a prize. While we strive fully to protect your personal information, Sponsor cannot ensure or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us or any information provided by our online products or services, and you do so at your own risk. Sponsor will not be liable for disclosures of your personal information due to errors in transmission or unauthorized acts of third parties. However, once we receive your transmission, we do our best to ensure its security on our systems by making reasonable efforts to protect the information.
