Recently, redCLARA,
the pan-Latin American regional network of CLARA (Cooperacion
Latino-Americana de Redes Avanzadas), which is comprised of over
15 National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in the Latin
American region--established a direct connection to the Abilene
network via a 1 Gbps connection over a fiber link between San
Diego, California and Tijuana in Mexico, and then over CENIC's
CalREN infrastructure. Additionally, Mexico's NREN CUDI
also established a second connection to Abilene, via a 1 Gbps
link over this fiber link and over the CalREN infrastructure.
CUDI also peers with Abilene via a 1 Gbps over fiber link between
Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas--also facilitated by
the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Texas
at Austin.
These connections are made possible by the WHREN-LILA
(Western Hemisphere Research and Education Networks - Links Interconnecting
Latin America) project, which is a cooperative of research and
education networks across the Americas. WHREN is funded by a grant
(award number 0441095) from the US National Science Foundation,
under the International
Research Network Connections (IRNC) program. More information
on the project and the PI's and Co-Pi's is available on the WHREN-LILA
pages at the URL above.
